Things Are Gettin' Kinda Sketchy Around Here...

Hey, kids! Just thought I'd take a quick moment to share some art. If you can call it that.

Since starting at Funko, I've quickly developed this urge to see just about every pop culture character I can think of in Pop! form. Unfortunately, things like licensing issues, low collector interest or whatnot keep us from being able to officially make them.

Also, time is an issue. I don't have the time to design full digital renderings of every Pop! that pops (no pun intended) into my head, so I've started carrying a sketchbook with me for the sole purpose of just getting the rough ideas out of my noodle and onto some paper.

Each of these sketches has only taken me around 10 minutes or so to draw, so I admit they are rather sloppy, but I thought it would be fun to share anyway.

Hope you dig 'em. I'm sure there will be more in the future.

Again, I must stress that these are just sketches that I did for fun! Just because I sketched them, that doesn't mean that Pops of these character are or are not coming out one day. If I don't say that, the rumor mill will start rolling unecessarily. And we can't have that.

Classic Monster Luchador Masks!

I did these for my boss for his birthday. Just thought I'd share. There's nothing like getting down to some good old fashioned drawing with markers on paper. Enjoy...

Introducing... TEEFS!

I was doodling around with some new character designs and I came up with these little tooth-shaped folks that I thought were pretty cute. And because they are tooth-shaped, I'm calling 'em TEEFS! Get it?

Anyway, maybe I'll do more of these in the future. In fact, I owe a lot of you some original art and since I have little free time and these guys are pretty quick, easy and fun to make, maybe I'll switch over to this style for the Payback series. Unless you all think these suck.

I Find Your Lack of Candy Canes Disturbing...

I had completely forgotten about this little cartoon I did a couple of years ago. Funny that I should unearth it only a couple of days before Christmas. Merry Christmas to all my fellow Star Wars nerds!

A Cartoon Bats for Chunky B!

Some of you may have heard about the "Battle for the Cowl", a contest in which I was soundly beaten by my most worthy opponent, Chunky B of Eclectorama. Part of the deal was that the loser had to fork over a Batman figure and to draw the winner an original piece of Batman art, declaring the winner the king of all Batman figure collectors.

And since I lost, here's what I made for Chunky B...

This is a newer style for me. A mix of basic shapes in Adobe Illustrator and then refined a bit in Photoshop. I had so much fun with this piece that I may just have to put the whole CARZ! thing on hold for a bit and maybe do a series of character portraits in this style. We'll see.

Until then, I have an "assignment" to draw a pirate/ninja/zombie fight. Stay tuned!

Drunk Punk!

I did this logo last Fall for a company in Amsterdam. Despite its apparent messiness, a ton of work went into it to get it to look just right. And if you're curious about what "Drunk Punk" is, it's a pill you take before you go out drinking so you won't be hungover the next day. I have no idea if it works, but I know that the logo looks mighty kick ass on a bottle. If I do say so myself.

FREAK SHOW A-GO-GO!

I did this poster for a burlesque show last fall/winter and the whole thing had this "freakshow" theme, so when I did the rough sketch of it, I naturally tried to cram as much freakishness into it as possible. This is how one ends up with a two-headed, snake-charming, burlesque dancer.

Of course, that was a bit too freaky for the client, so I had to take out a head, and at one point the devil tail was in question. But I got to give the gal a mustache, so that sort of makes up for the removed second head. Here's the second round of art...

By the way, you all can click on the pics to see them bigger. Just sayin'. :)

RPG Book Illustrations!

Today's post involves a couple of pieces of artwork that I did for this locally published RPG book this past Spring. In this case, I was asked to draw various things that they needed for the book and was given a pretty fair amount of creative license to do the work in any style I wanted, so this was a pretty fun project.

The first thing they needed was this half goat half human creature decked out in adventuring gear. I love this piece because it represents a moment when I was trying out a new style and just running with it.

I was also asked to do some weird sea creature spot illustrations, which the art director didn't like at first, but I think they made it into the book anyway.

So there's today's artwork post! I'll see what else I can dig up.
